she. Why do you say that “the school keeps away from its children”?
Patrice Horie. Today’s school continues to teach in the same way as before while changing the world. You must better prepare children for the society of tomorrow, especially by taking into account the digital tools – computers, tablets and smartphones – which today are so important in their daily lives and in the world in general. I am not saying that this phenomenon is positive or negative, I do not judge the value, I am glad to note its existence and that it would be pointless to deny it. These tools are not necessarily synonymous with alienation as some parents think. It all depends on how it is used and how adults support their children in digital learning.
she. What are the consequences of this school system? ” old or old »?
pH It produces some good pupils and leaves many others by the wayside. The latter’s creativity, ingenuity and talents are ignored. As a result, they are capturing and searching other, often virtual, universes for ways to satisfy their curiosity. Admittedly, a certain number follow the academic river without much difficulty, respecting the instructions on the surface, but the truth is that they are looking elsewhere – in screens – for what they develop their intellectual, cultural and social skills. .
” We can no longer stay in one-hour lecture format »
she. Do you feel that the students have changed a lot?
pH Yes, this generation has a different relationship to time. The ability to concentrate has diminished. Teaching methods must be adapted. We can no longer stay in one-hour lecture format. Once we get the students to work in groups, we collectively notice that they are able to take an interest in their work for a long and intense time. Especially if they come out of a negative situation.
she. What skills should the school develop in the younger generations?
pH We must foster curiosity, creativity, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking in the face of the flow of information in which we live. Qualities needed to adapt to the world of tomorrow, which will never stop changing. Many of the jobs of the future do not yet exist and will require training several times in a lifetime. We are far from old school being trained in one profession we’ve been practicing our whole lives. If we do not go down this path, we risk creating wary adults, anxious about the future.
” The gap between students and school may become wider and wider »
she. Does everything seem vulnerable to cash on the current school’s balance sheet?
pH Of course not. There are many interesting initiatives within it, but they are often isolated. How is it generalized? How do you make an oil slick? The school remains a fortress that does not move, a big machine where attention is above all accounting – the obsession with the good mark! – The disciplinary. Faced with a student who drops out, we do not seek to understand what moves him, when there are ways to recharge him. You still need to focus on what interests him. Today, children and teens often acquire their acquaintances outside of school: for example, they will give more credit to an influencer than to a teacher. Let’s take this fact into consideration. We must move quickly. Otherwise, the gap between the students and the school will become larger and larger.
she. Some parents try to keep their children away from screens as much as possible. Is this a good thing?
pH Obviously, we have to teach them to limit their screen consumption. As such, the 3-6-9-12 rule, suggested by psychiatrist Serge Tesserone, is a good thing. On the other hand, as of a certain age, a total or very strict ban seems counterproductive to me. In particular because it goes against the practices of adults. How many parents have very clear speech against the screen while spending their time with their noses in their smartphones! How do you want to be credible? It should come as no surprise that younger generations are dying to get there. Also, let’s not demonize the screens too much. Not many of us were perfect teenagers, yet we did manage to learn the trade, to become independent. The same will happen with this generation. Let’s trust him.
