Smartphones contain about 30 different items, some of which run out on Earth.

Scientists say there is an urgent need to speed up e-waste recycling, as mining precious metals to make new tools is unsustainable.

According to one study, the mountain of discarded electronic devices in the world will weigh 57 million tons in 2021 alone.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) believes that a global effort must now be made to mine this waste, rather than the land.

Global conflicts also pose a threat to the supply chains of precious metals.
