Soon you will be able to feel in the Metaverse – including Virtual PETS

METAVERSE may be without smells like living in black and white – and even bad things like body odor and farts have a place.

This is according to a sensory scientist who is pushing the boundaries of virtual reality to a whole new level.

Virtual reality and the metaverse have focused largely on sight, hearing, and touch, but taste and smell are often overlooked, often because their realization is too complex.

But a company called OVR Technology has found a way to bring scent into the virtual world that could eventually pave the way for the Metaverse as well.

And for a truly multisensory experience, it should be not only all great smells like roses or food, but also those we tend to avoid in the real world.

“For me, living in the world of perfume, all scents are interesting, even the coolest scents and they have their function,” Aaron Wisniewski, president of OVR Technology, told The Sun.

“All of them have a role – the smells of humans.

“Sure, smelling a fart, you can prank someone.

“But there are also some really high-impact, really interesting scents.”

For example, his team worked with a researcher on a program called Brave Mind that uses scent to help war veterans with PTSD.

Besides virtual reality, it uses foul odors such as blood, feces, urine, burning hair, and smoke to help them recover.

“All of these foul smells are memory stimuli, which you can use in a therapeutic setting,” he said.

“We’re just scratching the surface of what can be done with this technology.”

But he doesn’t think the metaverse will just recreate existing scents, but that new scents will also be invented.

He continued, “We have to reinvent what smell is, what is the smell of outer space and lasers and monsters and all those wonderful things.”

“So we’re not afraid of smells, but what we do is figure out what smells we can create and who we can work with to make a positive, measurable impact.”

Among the most enjoyable scents the four-year-old company has developed are Mindfulness Trials, allowing users to choose from natural environments such as a waterfall or beach where they can access scented orbs.

The smart technology works with a cartridge that is attached to the front of the VR headset and releases tiny scent particles when it gets close to the relevant virtual object using invisible geometry.

So if you get close to a rose, it will start to smell it – and the closer it is to you, the stronger the smell.

Wisniewski – a self-proclaimed “mad scientist” who has long worked on all things smell – has said that smell is key to the metaverse because it has a massive subconscious effect on memory, emotions, and motivation.

“I think a lot of people who lost their sense of smell during Covid can testify, ‘Oh my God, this is really important,'” he said.

Many people who have lost their sense of smell describe it as detached from reality, like black and white or behind a pane of glass.

“I’d hate for the metaverse to be so close to this feeling, the collective digital anosmia.”
