The proxy war between the United States and NATO against Russia in Ukraine has pushed the world to the brink of global war and nuclear catastrophe. NATO powers have sabotaged all efforts to reach a negotiated settlement. Biden’s government dramatically escalates the conflict. He has promised to pump tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons into the war and declares his goal to secure a strategic defeat for Russia.

The coronavirus pandemic, now in its third year, has killed 20 million people worldwide. New variables are spreading all over the world, even as capitalist governments declare the end of the pandemic and end all restrictions on economic activities that were supposed to stop its spread. Banks and companies around the world are putting enormous pressure on China to end its “Covid Zero” policy, which would result in the deaths of millions more. The uncontrolled spread of the virus may result in the emergence of new, more lethal variants, which could render vaccines ineffective.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the global ruling elite has made a massive transfer of wealth, accumulating unprecedented sums and pushing billions of people into poverty. Crushing indebted developing economies, the IMF and World Bank are demanding harsh restructuring programs that will cut social spending, deepen hardships and intensify class struggle. Capital markets are highly unstable, commodity prices are rising, and supply chains are collapsing.

The war sanctions imposed on Russia by the American and European imperialist powers are driving hundreds of millions of people to starvation. In the developing world, the loss of food and fertilizer exports from the Eastern European breadbasket means mass starvation looms. In developed countries, rising prices mean that hundreds of millions of people struggle to survive or escape poverty. Rampant inflation has lowered the real wages of billions of workers around the world.
