The Creative Economy in the Era of the Metaverse: An Opportunity-Generating Revolution

According to specialists, Tunisia has every opportunity to become a major player in metaviruses. However, to meet the challenge and be able to position themselves in this gigantic project that will revolutionize the Internet, the actors of the creative economy must unite to create an ecosystem that will allow them to develop their projects and find funding.

The cultural and creative industry is by no means immune to the winds of change that were brewing with the arrival of metaverses. On the contrary, it is an essential component that continues to produce a lot of ink. Recognizing the scale of the impending revolution, players in the creative economy are showing their willingness to be part of an unprecedented transformation and reach a new world where everyone can unleash their imagination and creativity. What is the link between beyond and the creative economy? How do actors in the creative economy perceive this revolution that is knocking on their doors?

In order to find answers to these questions, the Ticdce Center (Tunisia’s International Center for Digital Cultural Economy), in cooperation with the DigiArt Living Lab Association, organized a meeting under the theme “Passage to Metaverse”.

Decentralization and monetization of product content

The debate took place on Thursday, April 21st at the Cité de la Culture, in the presence of cultural entrepreneurs, specialists in creative techniques and metaverses. The event was an opportunity for startups to discuss the new challenges facing young creative companies in the era of disruptive new technologies, particularly in terms of business model, financing, and access to new platforms dedicated to artistic creativity.

During his presentation, Mohamed Zoghlami, International Consultant in Strategy and Development who specializes in Creative Industries and Metaverse in Africa, introduced young people to the dynamics of Internet development that was a catalyst that served as a base for metaverses. Define, in this context, the concept of digital value, which emerged after the advent of Web 3.0. It stems from the desire of Internet users to benefit from the business model of Internet giant Gafam, which monopolizes data and concentrates content and information produced on the Web.

In fact, the philosophy of Web 2.0 (which has been in use for more than 20 years) is based on copying information and content, which reduces its digital value. Today, NFT technology will help monetize creative content and enable authentication and digital intellectual property. It is the tool that guarantees the numerical value. “In Web 3.0, we become the owners of a part of the Internet thanks to blockchain and smart contracts: everything we create will be ours. This right will allow us to determine how this value is explored. NFTs will revolutionize Web 3.0 and bring a solid foundation for metaverses,” explained Zoghlami. He added that the creative economy is the core component of Metaverse, which is at the crossroads of new disruptive technologies, Web 3.0, NFT, 5G, augmented reality, artificial intelligence…

Create a Tunisian ecosystem

According to the specialist, Tunisia has every opportunity to become a major player in the metaverse. However, you need to know how to position yourself in this huge project. Addressing the startups in the hall, Zoghlami called on young cultural entrepreneurs to unite and work together to create an ecosystem and then be able to fund and develop their projects.

For his part, XR Creative Technologist Ayman Makki explained that the metaverse is an extension of the real world, noting that the internet giants are in the process of creating their ecosystem where they will define and ensure interoperability of access and also identity between the different digital universes of metaverses.

Citing the example of Omniverse, a platform that has made it possible to democratize 3D creation thanks to Open Source USD, Samia Shalaby, Discussion Director and Creative Industry Expert, emphasized the importance of acquiring new skills, particularly in web development, now an important asset for young creators.
