Accenture wants to prepare companies for the ‘metaverse revolution’

Accenture is betting a lot on the emergence of the “metaverse,” a concept that remains obscure but the consulting giant is putting into the continuity of digital transformation as businesses and the economy in general have been experiencing it for decades. So it’s no surprise that it is at the heart of the annual “Tech Insight” report, which brings together the expertise of Accenture Research and Accenture Labs and is based, among other things, on a survey of 4,600 CEOs and 25,000 consumers in 35 countries and 25 industries.

In short, Accenture recognizes that the emergence of the metaverse is a big upheaval to come, in the same order as the Internet in the 1990s. And if it is still very early and its effect will not necessarily be felt years ago, then the technological bricks that will form the basis are already there. These are technologies that are already familiar to us, such as digital twins, virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, 5G or the Internet of Things.

New entity focused on ‘Metaverse Series’…
Accenture brings them together into one “metaveric continuum,” which he says will ultimately profoundly transform the way companies operate. Proof that he takes the subject very seriously, a new dedicated entity has been created, called Accenture Metaverse Continuum Business Group. “We want to have capabilities dedicated to the metaverse, with professionals just focused on that,” Explains to L’Usine Digitale Christophe Jeantet, CEO of Accenture Technology France. The structure is currently established at the global level, but will eventually be replicated at the European and national level.

The “Metaverse Continuum” section is built on a dozen or so Accenture entities that are dedicated to specific platforms (AWS, Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, ServiceNow, etc.), but is unique due to the cross-sectional nature of metaverses and thus to the disciplines it has in common. “It started with our strategic advisors, but also includes Accenture Interactive, Accenture Technology and Accenture Operations.Christophe Janet continues. We are fortunate to already have the skills for the technologies that serve as the basis for metaverse, from real-time 3D to blockchain technology and cybersecurity.”

The consulting firm will also engage in targeted acquisitions in order to accelerate technologies or platforms that may be lacking. “We completed the acquisition of German digital twins company Umlaut on March 1st,” Give as an example Christoph Janet. Others will follow, always focusing on talent. In October 2021, Julie Sweet, CEO of Accenture, revealed that her company employed more than 125,000 people in 12 months, and that in order to better accommodate them, it had outfitted itself with 60,000 headsets for virtual reality Meta Quest 2. And to access a virtual machine. A collaborative space called “The Ninth Floor”.

… in response to customers’ demand
A practical application that makes it possible to better answer the questions of partners. “We have received a lot of requests from our customers, who are legally curious about this new model.Christoph Janet confirms. Obviously we’re only in the beginning, and we don’t have an answer for everything. But we’re doing a lot of proof-of-concept and demos so they can get real-world examples of the capabilities of these technologies.” This could be, for example, the fact of displaying oneself in an immersive way in the digital twin of an industrial production line.

Accenture also evokes Nike or Gucci’s experiences selling virtual goods and underscores the emergence of a class of companies, dubbed the “leapfrog,” that have rapidly adopted new technologies to adapt to the pandemic and that as a result are performing four to five times better than their competitors in 2021. This is the message that emerges from this study: As was the case for e-commerce, the next phase of digital transformation will erode some competitive advantages and open windows of opportunity for companies smart enough to outsmart their competitors.
