So you can use your hands on Facebook Metaverse

The update focuses on recognizing motion when part of the hand is blocked from camera view. In this way, the device should be able to pick up cheers, cuddles, crossed hands, and other gestures that include occlusion.

Not just Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram: Meta is also working on Quest, a virtual reality (VR) viewer originally born under the name Oculus. Among the latest improvements is manual mixed reality tracking to support multiple types of movements, including toddlers and clapping. This is thanks to a new platform update Presence, which will be released only after a select developer preview, with the goal of ensuring a more complex and realistic set of interactions in VR.

Specifically, the update focuses on recognizing motion when part of the hand is blocked from viewing the camera. In this way, the device should be able to pick up cheers, sighs, crossed hands, and other gestures despite the blockage. Added to this are the thumb movement and more specific interface interactions such as pinching, grasping and poke. If that wasn’t enough, the development teams working on Presence have created custom gestures, like hitting the punching bag. So it’s clear that the Quest is no longer a device confined to virtual reality, but a tool that integrates the physical and virtual worlds, from a perspective that sees the division at the center.

In addition to the Quest, Meta is working on other “future devices,” such as a glove that can produce haptic feedback, motion capture, and an augmented reality (AR) wrist to read neural activity from the arm. This is possible thanks to technology created by CTRL-Labs startup, which was later acquired by Mark Zuckerberg in 2019.

The world of virtual interactions is undergoing a period of great change. Aside from Meta, there are also great strides forward for holographic communication. NASA’s latest operation in collaboration with the International Space Station (ISS) opens the door to new frontiers of human interactions over great distances.
